The Unified Registration System will begin operating in 2015 under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration with a compliance date of Nov. 1 for biennial updates. The URS is an electronic system designed to save money over the long term by reducing redundancy and making the registration process more efficient. The FMCSA will send out letters informing carriers of any upcoming updates 30 days before Nov. 1. If the carrier doesn’t meet the compliance deadline, then they can lose their Department of Transportation number. URS information will also be posted on their website.
